Portraits

So I probably took about 50 of Duane and many of them his eyes were closed.  The lighting in the background stunk.  The lighting in general was just bad.  I originally thought I wanted to capture his portrait while he was singing that didn't work out so well.  I had to ask him to open his eyes while he was singing which he wasn't so thrilled about.

The lighting stinks - would prefer to crop more.

The lighting isn't great and now as I look at it I wish I had at least his guitar next to him.

My mom has dementia going on.  So I though it would be fun to try and capture her.  The lighting wasn't great because she has the shadow on her face from the brim of her hat.  She was also a difficult model thus I had to take pictures of her in front of the door which wasn't a great back drop.

The girls were swimming thought it would be nice to capture two great friends.   Issue light - The shadows from the branches affected all of the shots.  I like the stones as the back drop for them.

  1. I like the variety of targets you tired! The lighting is an issue in some but you can see what you were going for. The picture of your mother is well done. Even though there is a shadow, it still looks just fine! Keep up the good work!

  2. I agree with Maggie. I think your shots are fine. If you recognize your problems, that's the first step in fixing them. The horizontal shot of Duane with his arms folded looking at the camera is excellent because the lighting reflects what he is doing. If you want to highlight his face a bit more than you could use some kind of reflective material to bounce the light up into the dark side of his face.

The portrait of your mother is awesome. It is bright, happy, and you have cropped out any of the distractions. My only suggestion for this would be for you to lower yourself as you did with the portrait of the two girls. Try to put yourself on the eye level of the subject that you are photographing.

Keep up the great work and keep trying to figure out solutions to lighting problems.

  3. I think the photo of your mom in my favorite, and yes you have the shadow over her forehead, but the rest of the light was actually good. It had the most brightness of the rest of the photos. I definitely think you tried for some great shots.
